PETER KUTTNER - ARTIST INFORMATION

Peter Kuttner
was born and raised on the rugged
coast of Maine.
Shortly after earning his Bachelor
of Fine Arts from Ringling School of Art and Design in
Sarasota, Florida. he became
art director for
New Life Films. He then headed the graphics
department of the National Museum of American
Illustration. Although he enjoyed the creativity of
these dynamic institutions he always found the most
satisfaction in making his own artwork.
Kuttner's
portfolio includes three genres of paintings:
cityscapes, still lifes/florals and minimal abstractions.
His gritty cityscapes depict urban narratives abstracted
through architectural
detail. His work invites the viewer
to linger in the memory of their own encounters. Kuttner
often populates the painted plane with incomplete
phrases scribbled in pencil. Other times the writing
appears as a broken abandoned street sign, pointing
viewers in the direction of their pasts. The Impressionistic treatment of
the
canvas, combined with the text fragments, results in unique artworks that
are
truly his own.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"Formally, my work is inspired and
influenced by the assemblages of Rauschenberg, the palette
of Van Gogh, Rothko's metaphysics and the
airy compositions made popular by the Impressionists.
I exploit the two-dimensionality of the
painted plane as a structure of opportunity for depth by
layering texture, color and finishes.
My canvases become environments that are
simultaneously familiar and abstracted."
