LOUISE RAUH - ARTIST STATEMENT AND
THE PROCESS
"I keep going back to aluminum. As a metal artist I
find a
singular beauty in the material most commonly associated
with cooking utensils and the
aerospace industry. The
lightness of the metal and clean, white surface provides
me with a nearly perfect canvas to work in 3-D. Transition
is a
current theme in my work. The etched pieces reflect change
through growth
and eventual decay, delicacy belied by
the strength of material," states Louise
Rauh
Asphaultum, a resist commonly used in printmaking and
jewelry, it is
applied by brush to the surface of the bowl in a deliberate pattern
and
placed in an alkaline bath for 1-3 hours. The resist protects portions of
the piece while the alkaline solution gradually dissolves exposed metal.
This
process is repeated between 12 - 30 times to achieve the desired
depth and
intricacy of the surface design. The piece is then cleaned,
bleached in an acid
solution to remove any residue from the original
alloy. It is then
finished with several applications of acrylic ink.
