ALVIN JOHN - ARTIST INFORMATION
Alvin John,
(Dine), is originally from Rainbow Springs, Arizona and is a con-
temporary steel sculptor.
His clan is Edgewater and known for the Black
Streak people clan. Alvin
works in steel and copper. The polish on his
pieces is perfect. He is
works in many abstract designs which are often
linked to his heritage.
When his father was living,
Alvin participated with him in Yei bei chi ceremonies
and assisted with sand paintings. The Yeis are the Navajo holy gods
and the
ceremony is performed during
the winter season. The purpose of the ceremony
is to heal the patient who
is ill. They believe te Yeis are holy people, who will
help the person come back
into harmony and to walk in beauty.
"My mother is a Navajo rug weaver who has assisted me to
understand the Navajo ways of life. My grandfather was
a respected medicine man who has
taught many. My compassion
for artwork revolves around my family up-bringing and
the Navajo
Mythology"
